Left at 11.18. Spent morning before leaving in writing to Constance and continuing my draft of the Running Set notation. Met an interesting man in the train, English by birth, American by nationality, Mr Salway, a landscape gardener and present manager of a large cemetery at Cincinnati! Told us much about the forest trees as we went along. The autumn colourings are most violent — crimsons, orange, russets and golds — rather overdone to my taste. But then restraint is not the strong point in America — even Nature gets a bit above herself and does things extravagantly and in an advertising spirit! Still it is most wonderful to see the Forest in its Autumn clothing. Reached Knoxville and found it worn[?] and dirty as usual the Hotel Atkin especially so. Dined and went to bed prepared for an early rise and for the last stage of our journey tomorrow.Location
