Breakfast at 8 o’clock. Many telephone messages afterward. Saw Putnam at 11 and arranged that he should give me a letter to Schirmer about my harmonized book suggesting that they publish putting Putnam’s name as well as their own on the book and give him a good allowance on sales — a very good arrangement for me and him if it comes off and Barker is willing. Then to Shaw about lectures. "Little doing", alas! Called on Gray who of course was away in Connecticut. In the afternoon wrote a lot of letters to Aldrich, Farnsworth, Forsyth, Hough , Mrs Callery etc. In the evening dined with Rabold and Gowing at their new rooms with the Gilmans. Played my songs to them & spent a most pleasant evening. Altogether a very enjoyable first day in N[ew] York.Location
