Went round to Rabold’s to use his piano and finish off my songs, but he was out and I couldn’t get it, so I called on Madewell of the Transcript and had a long talk with him. He gave me some of Burleigh’s settings of Negro Spirituals and asked me about certain cadences — which of course were all wrongly treated from a modal point of view.1 Then back to Rabold’s found Gowing at home and he let me in. Spent an hour there and corrected "Now once I did court" and got back to late lunch in our room at 1.45. At 4.30 we had a rehearsal of Running Set. Maud and I dined alone at English place in 43rd street and then in the evening I made the corrections in the songs that I had made in the morning at the piano, and wrote up the 5 songs I took down from Mrs Clapp. Have a lamp in my room now which takes off the strain on my eyes of working at night. Weather quite warm and summery. A queer climate!Location
