Breakfast soon after 7.30. Then go to Madison via Hudson Tube, Hoboken etc. Arrive there at 10. Sec[retary] meets us and motors us to hall hard by where we lecture & sing for 1_ hours. A very sticky audience of old ladies, all knitting, who take everything very seriously and refuse to smile even at my best jokes. Got back at 1.45. Rest and then to R[ussell] S[age] Foundation for final rehearsal of Running Set — I have to dance because of Fisher’s defection. Charlotte Rabold Maud and I then dine at Peg Woffington’s in honour of my birthday. Rabold gave me a lovely present, a box containing cigarettes, cigarette box ash tray, nuts, prunes & all sorts of things. The Gilmans sent me a lovely basket of grapes and a bottle of French Plums! Haven’t had so many presents on my birthday for years!Location
