Worked hard at the R[unning] Set all the morning till lunch time. Maud went out to the Gilmans to meal with them; I waited behind to entertain Aldrich who had promised to lunch with me, but he never turned up so I had to eat by myself. After tea Maud and I walked down to Glenns to return one paper he had lent me and to give him a copy of the New Statesman. It was bitterly cold again (after two warm days!) but we walked briskly and managed to keep fairly warm. Bought Butler’s note books for Joaney & sent it off and a copy of Erewhon for a Xmas present to Susan Gilman.1 Dined at Old English place and then spent the evening writing at my book. There is a great deal yet to be done with the Introduction, but I have finished the technical part of it. Have got a reservation on the 2 p.m. train for Chicago on New Year’s day. Trains very crowded just now.Location
