9 o’clock breakfast, a relief not to have to get up early and trait off to the classes. But so cold at breakfast, the thermometer registering 9 points below zero, the coldest day recorded for many years. Maud wisely stuck in bed till 10 or 10.30! Wrote at my desk all the morning & then to lunch with the Dyneley Prince’s, meeting Mr Carolan & Chancellor Lewis & their wives. During the first part of lunch all six talked at the top of their voices so that I could not hear and wondered whether I were in a savage or civilised country! This is not by any means unusual but it shows at its worst among the smart or would-be smart people. Home at 4.30 to tea, nearly frozen walking from the trolley — the cold is incredible, I have never felt anything like it. It hurts me most in the eyes and forehead immediately above the eyes. Rabold> dined with us downstairs and I wrote letters in the evening to Mrs Callery, Mrs Storrow, Aldrich and Bradley.Location
