Transcription Notes
Started off pretty early in search of Kirk Freeman and after a couple of hours of walking under a very hot sun ran him to earth, not so very far from our hotel! Got a few songs from him but found him rather disappointing. Mrs Sarah Buckner had been staying with him and had only left an hour before we arrived — she is now living in W[est] Virginia. After lunch and tea went out in search of Mrs Godfrey. Had a bad attack of asthma and had great difficulty in keeping going while we kept doubling on our tracks vainly searching for her. At length we ran her to earth in Mrs Mary Gibson’s cottage. She is a youngish woman of musical proclivities — plays the violin, guitar, auto-harp, piano etc — and is therefore a bit too modern for us. She confessed she had never been able to carry a "minor" tune. It took her a long while to understand what we wanted but she did at last and said "Oh you want songs without any music" and she talked of "tunes without music" and of my "making music to the songs she sang", meaning by music a written or printed copy of music! This use of the word clears up many cryptic sayings we have heard before.Location
