Slept fairly well but had to get up at 7 as we had to change at Washington where we arrived at 7.35. As we couldn’t get reservations on either the 7.40, 8 or 9-trains we had to wait until the 9.30. We had breakfast at the station — the usual second-rate food, for an exorbitant amount! — rather a fall-down after Grove Park Inn. Arrived at N[ew] York at 3.30, glad as we always are to get back here. We have rooms on the 12th floor so that although they are rather small, we have plenty of air and light. Trunks of course will not come till tomorrow owing to this wretched American system so we cannot settle in this afternoon as we should like to do. So we have tea, wash & shave, and then go to dinner at the Gilman’s who telephone to us to say that Rabold is with them! We had a pleasant meeting, a nice dinner and a long talk afterwards. It was jolly to meet them once again. They are perhaps the most intimate friends we have made in this country. Weather very muggy and a fine drizzly rain. So we trammed there but walked home despite the wet. Have got our small rooms on the 12th floor at the hotel.Location
