Called on Putnam by appointment at 10.30 and discussed about the publication of the sequels to my first Appalachian book. He was most complimentary. Said that I had established myself as the first authority on the subject and that the firm were proud to be my publishers! Then to Meyrowitz about their blunders! and afterwards to the British Consulate to enquire about the procedure concerning passports etc in case we wanted to return home to England. Was told that we should have to get permit from the Military and they would need to be convinced that we had valid reasons for wishing to go back. Then left my pen at Swann’s to be repaired, bought another at Waterman’s and came back to the Algonquin to lunch. At 4.30 called on Glenn, waited some little while to see him and then had tea with him at the Art’s Club. Returned to Algonquin to have dinner at the Old English Place with Maud. Revised my books after dinner, or rather completed the revision which I had begun at Asheville. Weather beautifully clear & bright but I am not feeling too well being rather head- achy etc.Location
