Woke up with bad headache & neuralgia over my right eye but all the same decided to go to Metro[politan]-Museum and investigate the dulcimer question there. Got in touch with Miss Morris there who entered very readily into my business and after lunch had the case opened so that I could make some accurate measurements of the "German Zither of the 18th Cent[ury]" which I had spotted last July. She also showed me a rustic form of mountain dulcimer — the only genuine made mountain instrument I had seen. As I found the measurements practically identical there is no doubt but that the instrument was introduced into the mountains by the Pennsylvania Dutch. We had to have lunch there as the case could not be opened until 2.30. Walked part of the way back rested, had some tea and then wrote a long letter to Helen [Kennedy] until 7, when we went out to Peg Woffington’s to dine Rabold & the Gilmans. They returned home with us and we showed them our books and sang many of the songs to them. They went about 10.30.Location
