Packed and wrote letters to Susannah Julianda etc all the morning. At 12 went to the Glenns where we lunched with him & the Campbells. At 2.30 we left for the British Consulate where we had an appointment at 3 p.m. After a long delay Maud had an interview with Major somebody or other who refused to allow her to accompany me to England — this is a terrible blow to all our hopes & desires & we returned home very dejected. Peggy [Scovill] telephoned she had come up to see us so we asked her to dinner, in the meanwhile going out & sending the following cable to Constance: - Decided to return early December Army Control officer will grant me a passport but not Maud without permission by cable from War Office. Can you procure this cannot leave her here alone. This cost 7 dollars! Peggy went home after dinner and I went hard at packing but managed to write to Mrs Burton of Ypsilanti & Constance. Rabold looked in for a few minutes to say good bye.Location
