Had early breakfast and then went down town to Consular office calling first at Waterman pen place and changing my pen and then buying some tobacco. I got to the office at 10 when they told me they would give me my passport "in a few minutes". As I expected, however, this was a mere excuse and I waited till 11 in vain and then was compelled to leave without my passport. Got back to Algonquin as quickly as I could and set about finishing my packing, paying a/c etc. Miss Gilman called in and later on Rabold. Eventually, taking our lunch with us, we got to the station at 12.30 to meet Peggy [Scovill] who gave me some cigarettes and Maud some chocolates. We arrived at Boston at 6, taxi’d to Hotel Bellevue, got some rather indifferent rooms and then had dinner, meeting, greatly to our surprise & pleasure, W. Dean Howells and his daughter. We had a long talk with them afterwards in the lounge and he said he would like to come to my lecture tomorrow if he was well enough. He is looking much older than when I last saw him.Location
