Got up about 8.30 feeling very much the worse for my night’s rest. Had the usual beastly breakfast in the train and eventually reached Cleveland at 12, about _ h[our] late. Cleveland is a dirty manufacturing place ranking in population 5th coming next to Boston. Got rather nice rooms, quiet, light & airy, at the Statler Hotel and while unpacking my suit case found to my intense mortification that I had left my two ivory brushes behind me. I have used them daily since 1886, i.e. 32 years — Ida gave them to me. Maud went out to "send a tracer" but I fear in vain. After lunch Miss Whitworth came round to say that she had written to us 10 days ago to postpone our visit on the plea of the Flu! We never had the letter of course. She is trying to get the classes together and thinks she may succeed. Sent following telegram to Clara Dyar at 5.45. Greatly prefer 22nd or 23rd but can manage 25th if necessary. cjs, Hotel Statler Cleveland.Location
