Awakened at 4.30 with guns, bells etc announcing the signing of the armistice and the end of the war. I had slept very badly owing to my neuralgia so this gave me something to think about during the remaining hours of the night. I cannot yet believe that that awful and terrible war is over. For the rest of the day the streets are crowded with people hooting, shouting, rattling and making every conceivable noise. We have to have our meals in our rooms as dining room too crowded to get in. In the morning we barge through the crowds to buy a few eatables and I got a pair of slippers for Maud’s birthday tomorrow. After tea we go round to the Y.M.C.A. and take our first classes. Very nice students in two relays, about 18 in each. We teach Gathering Peascods and Black Nag to each class. After dinner in our rooms we wrote letters. I write to May (about Mother’s grave) and Maud to shipping office (Cunard) and her London Bank. A wonderful day, but I do not feel like making a noise. The lifting of the cloud makes me feel thankful in a quiet way — I cannot forget poor Butterworth, Tiddy, Percy [Lucas] and the many others. Here they have made few sacrifices.Location
