A fine bright day after a severe white frost at night. Maud & I tramped out to see the town which we could not do yesterday owing to the crowded streets. We made many purchases cheese, butter, cakes, milk etc as we intend to have our lunches in our rooms as well as our breakfasts — partly for economy’s sake, and partly because in this way we can get better food. The prices are just cruel here. Butter 70 [cents] a pound, common cheese 40 cents, apples 20 cents apiece and milk 18 cents a quart at the shops and 60 cents a quart in the hotel which with the tip brings it to 11/2 per gallon.1 We noticed a very dirty tailors shop in the slums, with some greasy clothes hanging up in the window with a placard stating "Suits made to order from $30 upwards" i.e. more than I paid Stenison before the war for really well-cut clothes made of the finest cloth in the world! We took classes as usual in the afternoon and then dined quietly here. Classes going very well. The newspapers engross me; every issue contains some startling news and another step in the drama now being enacted free of charge!Location
