Wrote long letters to Constance and Mrs Storrows. Had breakfast early and got away at 9. Went first to the Cunard and then to the White Star and find that there are plenty of boats sailing but both offices refused to make reservations until we had got through the passport difficulty. So we then went to the Brit[ish] Consulate. I got my passport back and Maud sent in an application which looks as though it will be accepted — we shall know on Saturday morning when we go there again. Then we went to the American Bays[?] Office where we were given forms in triplicate to fill in of the most offensively inquisitorial character I have ever seen. We are told we should have to fill them in, have 4 photos taken and appear at the office again together with an American citizen to swear to our honesty. When we have done this — and it may take a long while — our passports & papers will be transmitted to Washington and in 14 days may be returned to us. Why America should have any say in the matter seeing that our own Consul is content that we should go I cannot imagine. It is very humiliating and irritating. Rabold came to dinner & stayed the evening. I took films to lantern place (Underwoods) and bought some English papers at Brentano’s.Location
