Set to work early upon our packing — a truly terrible business. I worked hard for the first two without seemingly making any impression! but gradually the many belongings that have steadily accumulated during the last 2 years became stowed away. I have my steamer trunk, my wardrobe trunk, portmanteau and heavy box of books and these will cost me a fortune over-weight when I get on the other side — perhaps on this side too! I wrote a long letter to Gummere sent Bradley his films (registered) and a letter to Clayton announcing my near arrival. After lunch downstairs with Rabold we stocked the latter with cast-off pamphlets, books etc and then rested. Mrs Callery came at 4.30 and brought me duplicates of the last drawings & we said good bye to her. Had tea and afterwards went round to Glenn to say good bye. He resented my dubbing the negroes as of a lower race & maintained it was a mere lack of education etc! Walked round to the Gilmans dined there and alas! said farewell with as little ceremony as possible, but I felt very sad walking home.Location
