Called at 6.45, put finishing touch to my many packages and breakfasted at 8. Rabold and later on Charlotte Foss joining us. Rabold went to the bank at 8.50 and Charlotte stayed till we left the hotel. Mrs Storrows came to say good bye after breakfast and gave us presents — Maud a sweater and me a scarf. We finished up everything spending a good deal of money in tips; I called on Steele, gave him my address etc and then at 10 o’clock we left for the dock. It took us about an hour to get on board — the formalities are endless — but at last we did board the Lapland and inspect our cabins. It is not much of a boat and it is very full of passengers, but it will no doubt do all right. Mrs Callery sent us 2 tin boxes as usual and Peggy [Scovill] sent us a gorgeous basket of fruit so we have plenty of supplementary supplies. The ship started on her journey just before 1 o’clock. I took a few farewell photographs of the tall buildings down town and then went down to lunch. Weather very cold so I stayed in most of the afternoon smoking & resting. Sea quite smooth. Very sad at seeing the last of New York.Location
