Had a very bad night as they shut the port and I found the ventilator open and belching forth hot air just under my head. Rang up the night steward at 1.30 a.m. and he after great difficulty managed to close the ventilator and after that I nearly stifled for want of air! So far we have put the clock on, 20, 32 & 32 minutes, 84 in all. If this is correct we must be going pretty slow! The food is passable but not good though much better I expect than we shall get in England. Maud gets on deck all day and has her meals side by side with a Miss De Lobillin[?] an American who has lived much in England near Godalming. She knows the Vaughan Williams’s. This morning some wireless messages were posted on the board but nothing of any importance among them. Have some nice talks with Mollison, a Somerset man by name Grey and an English business commercial traveller — Beck. Also with rather an interesting good looking man whose name I do not know. The army men keep much to themselves which is perhaps natural enough.
