Weather not so nice; a heavy roll and an occasional pitch with a following wind & high sea. We are lucky to be going before the sea and not against it. Determined to write some letters & succeeded in writing notes to Mrs Gibbs, Mrs Storrows, Mrs Callery and Peggy Scovill — this before lunch. Nothing much happened in the afternoon but there was a concert in the evening and I feeling unequal to more instructive lessons from one Y.M.C.A. gentleman, decided to absent myself. So Maud and I sat out on the deck after dinner. By the way Maud made her first appearance to-night in the saloon since the first day. The Detroit gentlemen were greatly impressed — she is the only woman at our table. Later on I had a long talk with Dr Kirk[?] etc in the smoking room about music and other things mainly matters industrial. One Glasgow man makes optical glass and told me many interesting things about it. We sat up till well after midnight. I go to bed late because I find it so hard to sleep at present. Yesterday I began to feel asthmatic — the first time for 2 or 3 weeks!
