We arrived off Liverpool at 8 a.m. but took some time coming down the river and did not tie up to the Quay before 12. Then we had lunch after which the immigration officer examined our passports and it was 2.30 before we left the ship. We spent nearly 3 hours in the Custom House waiting for our luggage and then getting it passed by the official. One of Maud’s suit cases was missing alas. While we were in the Custom House Charlie arrived much to my delight looking splendid. He helped us a lot but the business of getting our luggage to the station was a weary affair. It was useless to attempt to catch the last available train at 5.20 so we decided to stay the night, Charles at the Adelphi we at the Compton. Had dinner at the Adelphi and enjoyed it immensely after all the hurly burly of a very strenuous day. Weather very cold, high wind and sleet, giving me a good deal of asthma. Nothing can beat the English raw damp cold and we have run into a thoroughly bad specimen of it.Location
