A very cold morning after a very cold night! After breakfast began to unpack but it is a little difficult as I have no place to put away my clothes as yet, everything being in a state of muddle. However I unpacked the book box feeling very relieved at the safe arrival of my MSS, and the steamer trunk. Maud went out to lunch. I lunched with Constance & Susannah, Charlie still being in bed, and then snoozed in my chair till tea at 4 when Charlie & Maud both turned up. Maud and I typed letters to Helen [Kennedy], Mrs Crowhurst and Miss Lampson between tea and dinner time. After dinner we eat cakes out of the Deane box and chocolates while we talked about all things. The house is a very nice one, roomy, light and very quiet — there is a small garden backing on the FitzJohn’s Avenue gardens. The business of food and ration cards is rather disconcerting and so far we have not had much to eat. Everything seems very changed. London is just crammed to congestion. People who shop stand in long lines waiting to be served. It is a new England that we have come back to! but a very nice one, all the same!Location
