Started off shopping with Maud directly after breakfast. First we went to Winthrop Rogers only to find that he sailed for America about a week ago! Then to Novello’s where I saw Clayton who told me he had been having a long correspondence with the Columbia people who now maintain they are not liable for royalties on tunes copyrighted earlier than 1912. C[layton] maintains they are wrong in their law and over & above that they are bound by their contract. It is an important point more especially as already 8 cheques have come in amounting to 492 dollars seven tenths of which will come to me — a very welcome as well as an unexpected windfall! Then to Debenham’s and various places after which Maud went back as she was feeling far from well. I met Charlie at Bellini’s restaurant off Conduit Street & we lunched together I getting a double allowance of fish in lieu of meat course. Then he and I did a little shopping I buying a tea-pot for Constance and he a book for Joan. Got home for tea. Maud and I did accounts and talked over plans before dinner. Charlie and I sat up very late — long after midnight — talking generalities.Location
