A very cold night and I find it hard to get up in the morning. Wear my fur coat all day but fail to get warm till about 5 p.m. Didn’t do much in the morning beyond messing about in my room and exchanging presents. Joan gave me some beautiful handkerchiefs and Charlie a silver pencil case! Susannah who was in bed yesterday with a temperature - & we feared the Flu — is much better and up again. Charlie went to Caterham to see Xmas dinner’s of his men.1 We all walked over the Gilmours for dinner at 7.30 — an enormous turkey and a first rate dinner for these times. After dinner we played numerous games, charades etc and altogether spent a really enjoyable evening returning home about 12.30 in very cold weather. Leo Birch was to have joined us but for some unexplained reason didn’t turn up — he is on his way to take up duties as undersecretary to the Admin[istration?] at Constantinople. This is perhaps the happiest and most peaceful Xmas I ever remember and the first normal Xmas since 1913 — 5 years!Location
