The National Youth Folk Ensemble has today been announced as a National Youth Music Organisation.
There are now 15 National Youth Music Organisations, providing opportunities for thousands of young people across the country to take part in making, performing and enjoying music. From the coast of Cornwall up to the northern borders of England, these organisations offer large-scale, inclusive performances, music programmes, residencies, summer schools and workshops, helping to develop their skills, experience, and knowledge of music and supporting them to excel as young creatives.
From April, the Department for Education will contribute towards funding which has previously been confirmed for the English Folk Dance and Song Society as a National Portfolio Organisation of Arts Council England.

Katy Spicer, Chief Executive and Artistic Director of the English Folk Dance and Song Society, said: ‘The National Youth Folk Ensemble is run by the English Folk Dance and Song Society, the national development organisation championing folk music and dance at the heart of England’s rich and diverse cultural landscape. We have a long history of pioneering folk arts education and we are delighted that our Ensemble has been recognised as a National Youth Music Organisation, as a peer along with diverse and high calibre ensembles in a range of other musical genres. The Ensemble celebrates excellence within our expansive and inclusive vision of young people throughout England discovering, playing and loving folk music. Our progressive, highly creative, youth-led artistic process highlights folk music – past, present and future – as a living and ever-evolving tradition that makes a valuable contribution to our nation's music education and artistic life.’
