Folk Discovery is an ambitious programme to foster a new, more diverse folk scene suited to our multicultural, 21st-century landscape.
Over the past decade we have been increasing the diversity of the artists and educators we work with, through consultation and collaboration with a range of artists and organisations. Folk Discovery will take this work further.
In 2019 we ran a Folk Discovery two-day R&D event for 20 artists from culturally diverse backgrounds. Each artist showcased their traditional practice, and co-created ideas for cross-cultural creative learning projects. We ended with a collaborative ‘bhangra ceilidh’ under the musical direction of Kuljit Bhamra.
I have learnt so much and want to learn so much more. It was great – the openness to listen with heart and soul and collaborate! – Maria da Luz
We are now seeking funding to develop Folk Discovery, turning it into a major programme and taking it throughout England to create new ideas and interpretations of what folk can be.
We champion folk music and dance at the heart of cultural life, all across England.
Donations provide immediate support. But even more than that, they prove that so many people value what we do – helping us to secure funding from partner organisations.
