The Points of Light award recognises outstanding individual volunteers who make a positive change in their community and inspire others. It is fitting, therefore, that Ian Russell receives this award after his many years of fieldwork collecting, researching, and promoting traditional carol singing through his charity, Village Carols. In a personal letter to Ian Russell, the Prime Minister stated:
“Your passion for carols and traditional music is preserving and rekindling rich local traditions as well as raising money for charity.”
Theresa May, Prime Minister
Ian has had strong links with EFDSS for many years. He was the editor of Folk Music Journal from 1980 – 93, and was presented with an EFDSS Gold Badge in 1998. Most recently, in December 2016, he delivered a lecture on carol singing as a part of our Library Lectures series.
“It’s been a privilege and a pleasure to help, support and encourage local village carolling traditions during the past 47 years. Not only are the upholders of these traditions remarkable people but the carols they sing are very special. Over the years I’ve worked hard to document and gain recognition for this vital cultural heritage and hope in the future to be able to continue to do so.”
