Garden
Decorative-Edible-Ecological
The Cecil Sharp House garden is a low maintenance permaculture design inspired by the folk adage: one for the birds, one for the bugs and one for me – which chimes very well with the permaculture ethos of earth care, people care, fair shares. It is based on working with the soil-food-web, wildlife and plants as co-gardeners to maintain health and fertility.
The entrance garden and walled garden have been designed by permaculture designer Kayode Olafimihan. They are maintained by gardener Susannah Hall and a team of regular volunteers, including Good Gym Camden.
The garden has been awarded Camden in Bloom Best Business Garden in 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019.
The garden showcases a variety of apple trees which are central to the English folk tradition. A Saint Cecilia, Cecil Sharp’s birthday tree, three Red Sentinel crab apples and a Blenheim Orange christmas apple. The majority of the rest of the plants are edible and can be harvested by staff and by the volunteers who maintain the garden.
Many of the plants in the garden have been donated by supporters. We are also very grateful to various companies for their sponsorship, including Carbon Gold, Supreme Turf & Soils Ltd and Hazeleigh Wood.
The garden is ideal for receptions at summer weddings.
